ACE97 : DISCUSSION ON ACEDB_DOCUMENTATION =========================================== Sam Cartinhour, Dave Matthews and Sylvia Martinelli discussed the following topics : help.wrm / whelp : bringing it up to date. new features in code version 4-5 : their documentation for curators and users and publication through the public access sites. types of acedb documentation : the possibility of separating them into categories such as Tutorials a) for users b) for curators Manuals a) for users b) for curators c) for programmers New features list List of documents available and where. A new features list was drawn up and the items apportioned to advanced curators to document (see Advanced curators Features and documentation). Further discussion is needed on all the topics, although the updating of whelp/ is probably the most urgent task. help.wrm has not been updated since 1995; the whelp directory is more upto date but needs further revision to include documentation from ACE97. Documentation writers may like to note that all docs so far are UNIX oriented. We need to be more generalised and to separate out database specific topics from generalised display type topics, especially in whelp/. In the future, it is probably sensible that probe.nalusda becomes the primary site for acedb user and curator documentation and that places like Sanger Centre (and possibly NCBI) mirror this site. Dave Matthews could act as coordinator of this. A generalised whelp obtained with the binary could come with a set of optional extra organism-specific help files which could be linked into the standard help by curators.
